Parkinson’s Disease

BioSEND banks a wide range of biospecimen types for Parkinson disease (PD)-related studies. These studies include the Parkinson’s Disease Biomarkers Program (PDBP), an NINDS-funded initiative dedicated to research and discovery to advance diagnostic and progression biomarkers for Parkinson's Disease. BioSEND also banks samples for the Michael J Fox Foundation/NINDS Collaborative project BioFIND, a two-year observational study designed to complement the PPMI study in the discovery and \ verification of PD biomarkers. BioSEND also banks samples for some of the NINDS-funded Morris K. Udall Centers of Excellence for Parkinson's Disease Research.

Huntington Disease

Study Details

Parkinson’s Disease Biomarkers Program (PDBP)

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Parkinson's Disease Biomarkers Program (PDBP) was developed to accelerate the discovery of promising new diagnostic and progression biomarkers for Parkinson's disease. PDBP was established to promote the discovery of biomarker candidates for early detection and measurement of disease progression.

Study Subjects

Subjects are recruited and evaluated at one of 9 PDBP-funded research studies, located throughout the United States. Study subjects include individuals at various stages of Parkinson disease (PD) as well as controls. Basic study population information can be seen here.

PDBP-funded research studies collect a minimal dataset for each evaluated subject. More information on study data is available here.

DNA and RNA from blood, plasma, serum, whole blood, and CSF are available for request.

BioFIND

BioFIND is a cross-sectional clinical study, designed to discover and verify biomarkers of Parkinson's disease. It is sponsored by the Michael J. Fox Foundation with support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Investigators who request access to the BioFIND resource will be required to comply with Biospecimens User Agreement and/or the Data Use Agreement and to adhere to the Publication Policy.

Study Subjects

120 well-defined, moderately advanced PD patients and 120 healthy controls

Available Data

Demographic information, neurological history, medication history, MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment), ADL (Activities of Daily Living), MDS-UPDRS (Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale), Hoehn Yahr Stage, and Sleep/RBD (REM Sleep Behavior Disorder) questionnaire. All data are de-identified to protect patient privacy.
