Unlocking Scientific Potential: Requesting BioSEND Samples

Nothing can be learned from a specimen that never leaves the freezer. Our goal at BioSEND is to get samples into the laboratories of researchers investigating the cause, progression, and treatment of neurological diseases and disorders. You can request samples through our a straightforward four-step process: select, apply, review, and access. Disease-specific Biospecimen Review Access Committees (BRACs) perform periodic review, while we provide grant support letters to fortify your research endeavors.

Requesting Samples: Step by Step

When you're ready to access samples from BioSEND, start here:

Step 1: Identify samples that meet your needs

Start by selecting the cohort or cohorts which include the diagnosis and sample types you are researching.

Please note that some catalogs are not hosted on the BioSEND website. To register for access and browse the catalog for your chosen cohort, follow the catalog link provided on the study information page.

Browse available samples

There is no maximum or minimum number of samples that a researcher can request. Any request must justify the number of samples being requested.

You can request samples from multiple studies. However, be aware that if you want samples from studies/cohorts which are reviewed by two different BRACs (ex. you want PD samples from BioFIND and HD samples from PREDICT-HD), you may be asked to submit two applications.

Can't find the diagnosis or sample type you're looking for? Reach out to BioSEND for help identifying suitable alternate samples or sample resources, as needed. We are happy to help.

Official Letters for Grant Support

BoSEND can provide two types of letters for your grant:

  • If you complete an application and your request is approved by the BRAC, you will receive an official letter that indicates you have been approved for specimens. The approval is valid for 12 months.
  • If you do not complete an application and/or your request is not yet approved, BioSEND can provide a letter indicating the types of samples that we bank. The letter will also state that before any samples can be distributed to you, your application must be approved by the appropriate BRAC.
